Bhuta vidya is the sub-division of Ayurveda dedicated to mental, emotional and spiritual health.

While the teachings of Ayurveda have been in existence for over 5000 years, they were set forth at a time when the world was very different than it is today. Our approach to mental & emotional health applies the timeless wisdom of Ayurveda to the unique challenges we face in modern-day society. The epidemic-level of mental health disorders paired with the only-increasing demands of everyday life, require a deep understanding of our innate nature as human beings and how we interact with the world around us.

Ayurveda has always viewed the mind, body and spirit as parts of an inter-connected whole. When looking at conditions of mental health imbalance, we must not only look at physical health, but also nutrition, lifestyle, daily routine, environment, relationships and belief systems.

A disturbance in the physical body, if untreated, can progress to the point that mental and emotional health are affected. Likewise, if disturbances of the mind are not addressed, they will only manifest and spread, leading to a point where they take on the physical characteristics of disease.

The system of Ayurveda is based on an understanding of each individual’s unique mind-body constitution and how this influences their response to internal and external environments. It also presents a model of how each person, with regard to their distinct constitution, can use diet and lifestyle to maintain health and prevent imbalance from occurring. Even in cases where disease or imbalance have set in, Ayurvedic health interventions can be applied to slow progression, activate the body’s self-healing abilities, and begin the process of restoring.

In the area of mental and emotional health, common conditions that we encounter include – anxiety, depression, bi-polar disorder, trauma, various forms of addiction and disordered eating. We use the system of Ayurveda to assess each individual, determine their distinct mind-body type, establish the root cause of the imbalance and identify contributing factors. We then work forward to create a sustainable diet and lifestyle to support the client, restore balance and promote optimal well-being.
